I’m sure you all have been hearing the hype around switching to natural deodorant over traditional deodorant because of the use of aluminum, parabens and phthalates in traditional deodorant. But, you probably have the same hesitations that I did… Like… But what about the sweating + stink factor of not using traditional deodorant?
There are TONS of brands of natural deodorant so I selected two of the more popular brands that I had heard about to test out PiperWai and Primal Pit Paste. I decided to use each of them for a month so that I could really give them an honest to goodness try and also to give my body time to acclimate to it as well. I wanted to see if it would work just as well on Day 1, as Day 10 as Day 30.
FIRST UP is PiperWai. I had seen them on Shark Tank (which always is appealing to me) and I placed my order for the little tub (it comes in both a tub and a stick option.) PiperWai is the first aluminum-free deodorant that uses activated charcoal to absorb wetness and fight odor. It’s ingredient list includes organic coconut oil, shea butter, and pure vitamin E. They also claim it to be “stain-free” so that it rubs in clear and won’t discolor your clothes. So HOW does it work? PiperWai’s formula uses activated charcoal which can absorb 1,000x its own weight in moisture, forming an absorbent shield between your skin and your shirt. So it’ll keep you dry without plugging your sweat glands like traditional antiperspirant. Sweat secreted from your underarms glands is actually odorless (who knew?) but it starts to smell when exposed to bacteria (did you know that?) PiperWai’s natural ingredients are designed to create a pH-balanced environment where bacteria can’t thrive, leaving us smelling good. Will it irritate my skin? So PiperWai is actually made with skin-conditioning ingredients like organic coconut oil, shea butter, cocoa butter, and pure vitamin E oil so it’s supposed to be great for for sensitive skin. Unlike other baking soda-heavy formulas, PiperWai won’t cause irritation, can be applied immediately after shaving and is even gentle on skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema and. It’s also made up of 11 pure essential oils that make it smell amazing: Bergamot, Clary Sage, Clove Leaf, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Lemongrass, Mandarin, Peppermint, Rosemary, Tea Tree & Thyme (so much goodness in that line-up right there).
Now… Primal Pit Paste – I selected this one in the stick option since I chose the jar for PiperWai and I chose the Jasmine scent (because mmmmm, jasmine). The ingredients are similar to PiperWai except that the main active ingredient in PiperWai – the charcoal, is subbed for baking soda in Primal Pit Paste. The Ingredients: Organic Shea Butter, Non-Aluminum Baking Soda, Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Beeswax, Organic Arrowroot Powder, Ylang Ylang Essential Oil, Jasmine Absolute Oil, Gardenia Absolute Oil, & Bergamot Essential Oil, Non-GMO Vitamin E derived 100% from Sunflowers. So while similar in concept, they’re slightly different and I think that is the key!
Alright now let’s get into the… HOW DID THEY WORK?
PiperWai was first up and I would like to say that it worked well from the very first day. No sweat. No smell. No staining on my clothes. It was great and I was definitely impressed. I did not love the jar… Scooping the deodorant out of the jar and rubbing it onto my underarms was a tad annoying and I definitely will opt for the stick when I purchase again. It did actually smell really good AND it worked as advertised. HOWEVER, I will say this. Towards the end of the 30 day trial I noticed it not working AS WELL as it had at the beginning. I wonder if your body becomes accustomed to the formula and stops working after awhile and you need to take a break from it for a little while before going back to it again.
In a nutshell: Yes, it works! Kept the sweat away, kept the stink away and didn’t stain my clothes. Long-term use still up in the air, though.
Before starting up my trial with Primal Pit Paste I went back to my regular deodorant for 2 weeks. I wanted to give them both a “fair start” coming from the same “situation” under my armpits, lol.
My first impression with Primal Pit Paste was that I loved the easiness of the stick vs the jar AND it smelled amazing. It went on easily and felt really smooth on my skin. I had super high hopes for this one based on all of those things! Unfortunately… that is where the good stuff ended. This deodorant did seem to limit the amount I was sweating but it made me smell awful with what sweat did come out. I know, gross. Kind of embarrassing but I almost contemplated stopping at a local Walgreens to pick up some deodorant because it was that bad… haha But an experiment is an experiment and I couldn’t give up on the first day! I continued to use it for the rest of the week and into the next but guys, honestly, it’s going to be a no from me.
In a nutshell: It didn’t work. It rolled on nice and smooth, loved the smell and the stick feature but the formula did not get the stink away.
Keep in mind that no two people’s body chemistry is exactly the same! So what works for me, may not work for you and vice versa. You may use Primal Pit Paste and it works fantastic for you and PiperWai doesn’t – doesn’t mean you should throw in the towel using any natural deodorant, just means you haven’t found the right one for your body chemistry just yet!
In doing some research I came across several other popular brands that I thought I would share with you as well in case you have tried these two and they didn’t work for you. Schmidt’s is one option, Bali Secrets is another one, and Native all had great reviews.
Hope this helps and you find the best natural alternative to keeping you smelling fabulous, friends!
