The iPhone 8 Plus is here!
So I’m definitely one of those people who feel the need to have the “latest and greatest” iPhone every year. I know, sounds silly, but I can’t help it. My biggest reason for wanting to upgrade every year? THE CAMERA. It really is the most important feature to me on my phone and when iPhone announces latest and greatest camera technology I’m so excited to try it out.
The camera isn’t the ONLY feature I was excited about, of course. I was really intrigued by the “all glass” concept of the phone. My first question being “how can that be durable?” I guess only time will tell. I currently to NOT a case on it either and have been carrying it around for the past few days with no accidents… yet. Ha! I also really loved the idea of having it “charging pad” compatible. The phone itself still has the outlet for the wall plug-in (and that is what comes with the box) but it is charging pad compatible and you can grab one on Amazon (like this.) AND the battery is supposed to be even better than the iPhone 7 Plus that I was using previously (so far it seems to be better, but time will tell on that one, too.)
So let’s take a look at this pretty thing!
The iPhone 8 Plus comes in 3 different colors: silver and gold and space gray (which looks black.) At first I was a little disappointed that there wasn’t a “rose gold” option like the iPhone 7 Plus but after unboxing the phone the iPhone 8 Plus while labeled “gold” definitely has a pink-ish hue to it. So for you guys that were contemplating the gold option, I would probably stick with silver or space gray unless you like to rock a little pink!
How about the sizing?
The phone itself is the same exact size as the iPhone 7 Plus which is great if you already have a case that you love! A lot of people are hesitant to “size up” to the iPhone Plus but as someone with fairly small hands I definitely don’t find it “too big” or difficult to hold/type. In fact, the thing holding me back from going to the iPhone X was because of it not being as large as the Plus. Once you size up you can’t go back? Or something like that.
But how does it feel? Glass?
I know, I was really curious about that too. I’ve never seen or held an “all-glass design” phone before so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had expectations of it being more “slippy” and I was sure I would need to put a case on it to protect myself from dropping it. HOWEVER – I was actually surprised to find it LESS SLIPPERY than the iPhone 7 Plus and that it does have a substantial grip feeling. In fact, I feel more confident carrying this one around without a case than I did my 7 Plus.
It’s smooth and sleek which you might think would leave room for a lot of fingerprint markings. I was also pleasantly surprised to find that not to be the case either. It actually does not show lots of fingerprints like I thought it would which is great.
You can also notice that the iPhone 8 Plus has a two-toned color palette which I hadn’t realized until I unboxed the phone. To me the back is almost like a blush pink and then the sides and “casing” of the phone are a deeper rose gold coloring.
And what comes in the box?
It’s my own fault for not fully reading the “what comes in the box” description before I ordered but hey – I was excited. So when I was unboxing the iPhone (video coming soon) I had fully expected the “charging pad” I mentioned earlier to be included only to find that it wasn’t and only the wall charger was included in the box. TAD DISAPPOINTED about that. For the price point we’re paying I feel like Apple really should have included the charging pad that comes with the new technology we’re paying for. But, was able to snag one off Amazon and all was well within the world again. Plus, an extra charger can never hurt, right?
The box also came with your standard Apple headphones which are great, too.
So let’s talk about the CAMERA quality!
So we’ve already established how pretty the iPhone 8 Plus is as far as design but let’s jump a little more into the whole reason I made the decision to purchase and that is the CAMERA.
My favorite new camera feature is the extended (and upgraded) options in the PORTRAIT FEATURE. On the iPhone 7 Plus we were introduced to the “Portrait” camera option which “blurred” the background of the photo resembling the bokeh-effect you achieve on an SLR camera. They’ve taken it a step further and introduced the “natural light,” “studio light,” “contour light,” “stage light,” and “stage light mono” options which take your already amazing standard iPhone camera to the next level.
Something to make note of also is the iPhone 8 Plus has the same camera as the iPhone X. I think I would have been more hesitant to purchase the 8 Plus if the camera wasn’t as good as the X so when I found out they were equipped with the same camera (the regular 8 does not have this camera) that sealed the deal for me.
Portrait: Contour Light
I’m going to share with you guys a couple of the pictures I’ve taken so far using the different iPhone 8 Plus portrait settings. Ice cream cone floating in my pool was taken with the contour light setting.
Portrait: Natural Light
This yummy pineapple (aka my favorite fruit) was taken with the natural light setting.
Portrait: Studio Light
Who doesn’t love succulents? I know I do. And I love them even more when using the iPhone 8 Plus to take their picture with the studio light setting. HA!
Portrait: Stage Light
One thing with the Portrait feature on the iPhone is the need for decent lighting so make sure when taking your pictures that you are in a well-lit room. I notice my outdoor pictures tend to be better than indoor but that’s pretty standard with any camera. However, my dining room is full of light and I snapped this picture of my dining room table spread with the stage light setting.
Portrait: Natural Light
One more with natural light (probably my favorite portrait setting) because I couldn’t resist not showing y’all how cute my Minnie is. So sleepy!
So there you have it! The iPhone 8 Plus!
Is it worth the upgrade? Depends why you want it! My reason being the camera – the answer is YES! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask and I’ll gladly answer!
