Ballet Flats: cue the complaints about blisters on the heels and sweaty feet. Totally guilty of the same complaints myself! I had tried dozens of pairs of ballet flats but none of them were what I would consider “comfortable” and definitely nothing I could wear for more than a couple hours at a time without that blister starting to well up on my heel.
But then a friend mentioned the brand Tieks to me. At the time I’d never heard of them before but a quick plug into Google and I was on their site, Oohh’ing and Aahh’ing at the fine Italian Leather ballet flats that boasted flexibility, durability, comfort and style in a wide assortment of colors and patterns… And then, with my jaw hanging down, I saw the price tag – $195 for a pair of FLATS? But my friend said “trust me, they’re amazing – you’re going to love them. They’re not like other flats and they’re totally worth it…” So, I mean, obviously you know what I had to do.
Well, y’all know me – I had to TRY them out but I wasn’t about to pay full price, HA! Not at first anyway. I scouted down a BST (buy, sell, trade) group on Facebook and I joined in there and started scouting the listings looking for a good deal. When I finally found a pair, around $100, I jumped on it and anxiously awaited their arrival. They were the “slate gray croc” print. When they arrived I ripped open the packaging and put them onto my feet, waiting for the magic to begin… Except… It didn’t. They hurt. They definitely didn’t feel like the “butter on my feet” that people had described them to be… I was bummed. And stumped. What the heck?
So, I went back into what was now one of my new most favorite places on the Internet, my Tieks group, and I voiced my concern and frustration… To which they said “What size did you order, girl? You know you need to size up, right?” SAY WHAT? No, I didn’t know that! I’ve always been a size 8 or 8.5 and have never worn a 9 in my life, why would I think to order a 9? But, now that they mentioned it… The discomfort I was feeling did have a lot to do with my toes feeling squished… They also recommended trying out the “Classics” print instead of the “Patents” because they tend to be a softer leather. They also mentioned to me the epic return policy that Tieks offered! Basically, you could order two of the same shoe in different sizes and return, without hassle, the one that didn’t fit. How genius, and awesome!
So I headed back over to Tieks.com and decided to pull the trigger again, this time paying full price (GASP!) and ordering a pair right from the website. I wasn’t sure which print to go with first, because they were all so amazing, but I went with LEOPARD. There was just something about that print that said, “Yes you need me.” And so I obliged and went with Leopard as my first pair of Tieks!
When they arrived (in a size 9) I slipped them onto my feet and…. AMAZING! Yes! So THIS is what everyone was talking about! The Leopard Tieks were awesome. The size 9 was perfect and the material of this print was so much softer than the Patent Leather of the Grey Croc I had tried previously. And while you might be surprised that I went with a “bold” print vs a more neutral solid color I was pleasantly surprised (and continue to be 3 years later) how versatile they are and how much they actually match with!
After that first pair I was hooked (clearly) and it became a borderline obsession (much to my husband’s dismay.) As I scoured my closet I would say to myself, “Oh that outfit would be so cute if only I had ____ color Tieks!” And so over the past 3 years every gift-giving holiday or special occasion resulted in a little turquoise box showing up at my doorstep with a pretty pair of turquoise-soled shoes. And as the addiction continued, the collection continued to grow.
The Rose Gold Glam (pictured above, top left) while one of my favorite color Tieks was probably the only one of my “current stash” that I needed to “break in”. It took me a half dozen times of wearing them for them to feel as soft and comfy as my other pairs. There is a lot of truth to the Classics being the most comfortable of all the Tieks, so if you’ve never tried them before I definitely do recommend starting with those first.
Every package from Tieks comes with the little turquoise box, the cute little flower on top and a personalized note card, specific to you and your purchase, from Tieks thanking you for your purchase! May seem like a small gesture but it’s a huge reason I love this company so much. Taking the time to have a handwritten note to each customer makes each transaction feel so personal and genuine. Each box also comes with a little “tote bag” that you can carry your shoes in which I thought was a sweet touch as well!
You might be asking yourself, well that’s nice they give you a tote bag, but why? WELL, one of the huge perks about these flats are the ability to fold them up within each other for easy storage in your purse or bag if you’re wearing these as you’re heading into work and then you need to change into heels! Pretty awesome, right?
One of the most common questions I get from people are “what colors do you tend to wear the most often and which do I wear the least” which is a really good question! Fuchsia, Lilac, Rose Gold Glam and Feather Grey are the ones I tend to wear the least. Leopard, Matte Black, Ballerina Pink and Mustard I tend to wear the most often. And after typing this out, it is encouraging me to put my Fuchsia on today because how can you not just love that bright pink? I mean, right?
My best suggestion to you when trying to decide what color to choose first would be to browse through the clothes in your closet and open p the “Boutiek” on the Tieks website to try and get an idea of what colors will coordinate with most of the things you already have. Ballerina Pink is such an easy neutral to pair with almost everything and as I mentioned before, Leopard tends to be too!
Another question I get often is “how do they hold up?” Most of the Tieks you see in these pictures are 2-3 years old! I’m pretty sure only my Lilac were purchased this year (Easter dress necessity, obviously) and in my opinion they hold up great! I have clean them with leather cleaner maybe once every 6 months to freshen them up but outside of that they just hold “wear” really well!
So there you have it, my Tieks collection and my complete review! I hope that helped you decide to at least give them a whirl (despite the intimidating price tag) I mean, Christmas is right around the corner… I think you should start your list to Santa early!
