ACTIVATED CHARCOAL FOR TEETH WHITENING?
I don’t know about you guys but my teeth are SO sensitive to traditional teeth whiteners! The Crest White Strips are actually painful for me to use… Which means I can basically all but forget doing professional teeth whitening at the dentist’s office… BUT, I wanted my teeth whiter and so I went on the hunt to find something that worked. I tried more gentle “whitening toothpaste” alternatives that promised “use for 30 days and have whiter teeth” but I never really see a whole lot of change! So… I started up my research again which is when I came across an article about ACTIVATED CHARCOAL for teeth whitening! Outside of using charcoal in the BBQ I really had no idea it served any other purpose, especially to whiten my teeth but it seemed like something easy enough to try!
I hopped on Amazon and at the time (about 2 years ago) there wasn’t anything “branded” as activated charcoal to whiten teeth like there is today so I just bought a bag of loose activated charcoal that had good reviews and hoped for the best! This is the one I bought for $9 and honestly 2.5 years later the bag is almost completely still full and I use it to whiten my teeth twice a month. Amazing (low-cost) investment for something that could potentially be amazing, right? Wasn’t sure if it would work but at that price point it was worth a shot!
The research I had done as far as “what to do” was super straight forward; not a whole lot to this!
1) Dump a little bit of the activated charcoal onto a paper towel
2) Wet your toothbrush
3) Dip your toothbrush into the charcoal and start brushing your teeth! Easy enough, right?
It’ll feel a little bit “dry” at first when you start brushing but as your saliva mixes with the charcoal it’ll spread everywhere more easily!
Two things I wasn’t prepared for though… THE MESS and the LESS THAN ATTRACTIVE FACE IN THE MIRROR! Ha! Pretty sure the first time I did this I terrified my kids… Almost as much as my charcoal mask (more about that in a little bit.)
To combat the mess my tips are 1) to place a paper towel in your sink so when you’re brushing your teeth all of the “droppings” fall onto the paper towel and not your sink (which is so hard to clean.) 2) have a cup handy that you can rinse and spit into instead of spitting into your sink. While it never stained anything of mine (I have a white vessel sink) it just is super hard to clean up and I like to eliminate the mess whenever possible (who doesn’t?) After spitting the “residue” into the cup just dump into the toilet and use a baby wipe to clean up any leftover mess.
BUT… Despite the mess and the face… It’s so worth it because it 100% WORKS! And it’s instantaneous results! None of the “use for 30 days to see results” here. As soon as you wash the charcoal off your teeth and out of your mouth you’ll see your teeth look whiter. It’s pretty amazing! When I first started doing this it was recommended to do 3 days in a row but after that just using once or twice a month is sufficient!
ACTIVATED CHARCOAL FOR CLEARER + BRIGHTER SKIN?
SO… Now you have this bag of charcoal powder and you’re wondering what else you can do with it, right? Well, that’s what I was thinking anyway! So I turned back to Google to find some other DIY beauty tricks for this charcoal powder I was now the proud owner of when I came across a recipe for a DIY CHARCOAL FACE MASK!
The ingredients were super basic I figured it was worth a shot!
+ 1 tsp bentonite clay (if you don’t have it you can grab it here for $10!)
+ 1 tsp activated charcoal powder
+ 2 tsp water
+ ½ tsp raw honey
+ 1 drop each tea tree and lavender essential oil (optional)
Step 1: Grab a little glass bowl from the kitchen and add the 2tsp of water and the essential oil (if you’re using it.)
Step 2: Drop the bentonite clay on top of the water + essential oil mixture and allow it to soak in / absorb for a few seconds
Step 3: Use a wooden spoon or rubber spatula to mix it all together (maybe take a couple of minutes to fully mix)
Step 4: Apply to your face! Allow it to dry and leave on for about 10 minutes before removing with warm water
So what do all the ingredients do for your skin?
Well, the Bentonite Clay is actually aged volcanic ash sediment and it will attract, trap and remove toxins from your body. Pretty amazing, right? It will basically pull all of those toxins right our of your skin! The Raw Honey is soothing and softening for the skin but it’s also antibacterial so it will actually help acne and blemishes. The Activated Charcoal also absorbs toxins (in fact, it’s used in emergency situations if internal poisoning is suspected to absorb those toxins out of the body!) When applied directly to the skin it works to pull and absorb toxins and impurities out of the skin. The added bonus ingredient, Essential Oils, such as tea tree and lavender will actually purify the skin. Tea Tree Oil is often used to treat acne because of it’s antimicrobial properties and Lavender to promote skin health. Just a 1/2 drop of each is all you need. Plus, they smell amazing!
While I was prepping for this blog my kiddos wanted to join in on the fun and I had a blast “painting their face” and they had a blast being “charcoal monsters” as they deemed themselves!
So now you’re all set for an AT-HOME SPA DAY that will leave your face clearer & brighter and your teeth whiter for less than $20!
